Error: "1683/index tag does not exist" when starting Accountants Office

This support note applies to:

  • AO Classic Tax (AU)
  • AO Classic Practice Management (AU)
  • AO Classic General Ledger (AU)
  • AO Classic (NZ)

When you open MYOB Accountants Office (AO) you may experience the error "1683/index tag does not exist". 

To eliminate this error delete the three CADATA files, the three AOFAVOURITES files, the three AOPROPERTIES files and all the files that have a .CDX extension that are located in your Data folder.

 Ensure that you have a backup of your data before performing the procedure.

How to delete the relevant files

Close the error message if it's still present.

  1. Right-click  the Start button and select Explore. Windows Explorer starts.

  2. Navigate to and open your Data folder. For example, X:\MYOBAO\Data. The contents of the folder appear.

  3. Highlight the three files named, AOPROPERTIES.BAK, AOPROPERTIES.CDX and AOPROPERTIES.DBF, and from the File menu, select Delete. The message "Are you sure you want to send these 3 items to the Recycle Bin?" appears.

    If file extensions are not visible, these three files are all named AOPROPERTIES. If you wish to activate file extensions, refer to the How to activate file extensions section.

  4. Click Yes. The files are deleted and no longer appear in the folder.

  5. Highlight the three files named, AOFAVOURITES.BAK, AOFAVOURITES.CDX and AOFAVOURITES.DBF, and from the File menu, select Delete. The message "Are you sure you want to send these 3 items to the Recycle Bin?" appears

    If file extensions are not visible, these three files will all be named AOFAVOURITES. If you want to activate file extension, refer to the How to activate file extensions section.

  6. Click Yes. The files are deleted and no longer appear in the folder.

  7. Highlight the three files named, CADATA.DBC, CADATA.DCT and CADATA.DCX, and from the File menu, select Delete. The message "Are you sure you want to send these 3 items to the Recycle Bin?" appears.

    If file extensions are not visible, these three files will all be named CADATA. If you wish to activate file extension, refer to the How to activate file extensions section.

  8. Click Yes. The files are deleted and no longer appear in the folder.

  9. From the View menu, select Details. The details of the folders and files appear

    If Details is already selected in the View menu, go to step 10.

  10. Click the Type column heading to sort by file type. The files are sorted by file type.

  11. Highlight all the files that are listed as CDX File in the Type column, and from the File menu, select Delete. The message "Are you sure you want to send these items to the Recycle Bin?" appears.

    If CDX File does not appear in the Type column for any files, highlight the files that have .CDX extensions in the Name column. If file extensions are not visible, you will need to activate extensions to accomplish this. For more details, refer to the How to activate file extensions section.

  12. Click Yes. The files are deleted and no longer appear in the folder and you can now restart Accountants office without experiencing this error.

    You may need to resize some Windows in Accountants Office and/or adjust your Favourites in the Module pane as some of the files deleted in the procedure above affect these settings.

How to activate file extensions
  1. Open Windows Explorer and from the Organise menu, click Folder and Search Options.The Folder Options window appears.

  2. Click the View tab and then deselect the Hide extension for known file types option and click OK. File extensions appear for the files in the Name column.
