You're seeing Error: '400: BadRequest - Payload issue. Contact support because you're trying to lodge a 2020 individual tax return for a part-year resident. The tax return you're trying to lodge will be stuck on Transmitting status.

If there are any other returns that are stuck on Transmitting status and are not for a part-year resident, see KB Troubleshooting returns stuck in transmitting or transmitted

Why are returns with a part-year resident stuck on transmitting status?

In our recent interactions with the ATO, we’ve identified an issue for any lodged 2020 Individual returns where the taxpayer is a part-year resident. The value at Number of months eligible for tax-free threshold field is not being sent to the ATO.

This has resulted in ATO incorrectly calculating tax payable on the Notice of Assessment (NOA) for the affected taxpayers.

We've resolved this issue in hotfix 56036984.

We recommend installing hotfix 56036984 before lodging any 2020 individual returns for a part-year resident. Otherwise lodging will fail with this error.

To fix the return with transmitted status
  1. Install hotfix 56036984.

  2. Open the affected tax return, ie the return that has the part-year resident.

  3. Go to Lodgment > Update > IPTCF forms.

  4. Select Single Return > OK.

  5. From the Status drop-down, select Lodged > then click OK.

  6. Repeat steps 3 and 4.

  7. From the Status drop-down select In Progress > then click OK.

  8. Open the return, go to Return Properties.

  9. Make sure Return Lodged via field is set to E (Electronic) and not P (Paper Return).

  10. Validate, complete, and re-lodge the return.

We apologise for the inconvenience this is caused.

FAQs

What if I've already lodged returns that have been accepted by the ATO?

If you've already lodged the return successfully to the ATO, you'll need to create an amendment after installing hotfix 56036984.

To fix the issue for lodged returns

  1. Install hotfix 56036984.

  2. Create an amendment for the affected returns.

  3. In the amendment details schedule, choose Taxpayer Error in Amendment type indicator and enter the details in the Reason for Changes, for example, MYOB software error.

  4. Lodge the amended return.
