Error: "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it" when installing AO

This support note applies to:

  • AO Practice Manager (NZ)
Article ID: 35210

In MYOB Accountants Office (AO) during the installation, when AO gets to the pre-check stage of the installer (this occurs right after selecting a database to convert and before licensing), you may get an error stating that the MYOB AO Classic data has serious errors.

Upon closer inspection, looking into the log file, the log file references the error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it".

This issue will also prevent SQL from installing if you choose not to convert AO Classic data.

This error occurs if the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) service is stopped and the Startup Type is set to Disabled.

To fix the error
  1. On the server, open the Services window by one of the following methods:
    • Click Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

    • Click Start > Administrative Tools > Services

    • Click Start > Run > services.msc.

  2. Locate and double click on the Windows Management Instrumentation service. The Windows Management Instrumentation service Properties window opens.
  3. Locate and change the Startup Type to Automatic. The Startup Type is changed.
  4. Click Apply, press the Start button and select OK. Your changes are saved and applied, and the installer will proceed further if re-run now.

If you cannot start this service, ensure you are logged in with administrator rights. If an error still occurs, you will need to speak with your IT Consultant.
