Finding the version and edition of SQL being used for an instance

If you need to find the version and edition of SQL for any reason, you can do so with a simple query.

To identify the version and edition of SQL
  1. Follow the menu path: START > All programs > Microsoft SQL Server 20xx > SQL Server Management Studio. The Connect to Server window appears.
  2. Enter the correct server and instance name as required and login details then click Connect. The instance appears.
  3. Click New Query. A query window appears.
  4. Type select @@version and click Execute. Query executed successfully appears.
  5. Expand the column under the results tab. The version/edition information becomes visible.
