Viewing hidden files, folders and drives or enabling file extensions in Windows

When performing processes involving files and folders, sometimes these items are "Hidden". You can view these hidden items by applying a setting within the Control Panel

How to view hidden files, folders and drives and enable file extensions
  1. Click the Start button and select Control Panel. The Control Panel window opens.

    Where your View by field is set to Category, click the drop-down arrow and select the Small icons option.
  2. Click Folder Options. The Folder Options window opens.
  3. Click the View tab. The Folder views and Advanced settings appear.
  4. Select the Show hidden files, folders, or drives in the Advanced settings area. The option is selected.

    This option appears in the Hidden files and folders section.
  5. Deselect the Hide extensions for known file types option. The option is deselected.

    This option appears after the Hidden files and folders section.
  6. Click Apply. The option is selected.
  7. Click OK. The option is saved and the Control Panel window appears.
