Error: "1705 file access denied"

This support note applies to:

  • AO Classic Tax (AU)
  • AO Classic Practice Management (AU)
  • AO Classic General Ledger (AU)
  • AO Classic (NZ)

This error occurs if MYOB Accountants Office (AO) Classic does not have access to a certain file. Depending on when the issue is occuring, the file in question will be different and can potentially a file in the Data folder.

If you are unsure as to where your Data folder resides, you can easily identify this location. At the desktop of MYOB Accountants Office, from the Help menu, select About MYOB Accountants Office. Click Application Details and refer to the Licence Information section.

If you are unsure what permission settings need to be changed to, please check with your system administrator.

To turn off UAC

On Windows 7 machines, especially new machines, the most common cause is User Account Control (UAC) which is a new security setting in these operating systems. MYOB recommends to turn UAC off.

To uncheck read-only

All machines

  1. Open Windows Explorer or Computer and navigate to your data folder. The files and folders contained here are displayed.
  2. Right-click on a blank space and select Properties. The Data Properties window appears.
  3. Click the Read-Only option so that it is unshaded or unticked, then click OK. The settings are changed.

Some machines

  1. Open Windows Explorer or Computer and navigate to your  Program Files or Program Files (x86) folder. The files and folders contained here are displayed.
  2. Right-click the Accountants Office folder and select Properties. The Accountants Office Properties window appears.
  3. Click the Read-Only option so that it is unshaded or unticked, then click OK. The settings are changed.
To check permissions

All machines

  1. Open Windows Explorer or Computer and navigate to your data folder. The files and folders contained here are displayed.
  2. Right-click on a blank space and select Properties. The Data Properties window appears.
  3. Click the Security tab. The security details are displayed.
  4. Click Advanced. The Advanced window opens.
  5. Ensure the correct user groups are selected in the Full Control option under Allow, then click OK. The settings are changed.

 Some machines

  1. Open Windows Explorer or Computer and navigate to your  Program Files or Program Files (x86) folder. The files and folders contained here are displayed.
  2. Right-click on the Accountants Office folder and select Properties. The Accountants Office Properties window appears.
  3. Click the Security tab. The security details are displayed.
  4. Click Advanced. The Advanced window opens.
  5. Ensure the correct user groups are selected in the Full Control option under Allow, then click OK. The settings are changed.

If the 1705 error still persists, it may be caused by 3rd party software. Generally, it is due to strict security settings in programs such as Anti-Virus or Anti-Spyware software, or on access scanning on temporary files. You may need to allow the program access to your temporary files in order for it to function properly. Please contact your IT provider for further assistance.
