Installing Microsoft SQL Server Express with Management Tools to MYOBACCT Instance

This support note applies to:

  • AE Practice Manager (AU, NZ)

  • AO Practice Manager (AU, NZ)

These instructions are only for SQL Express installations.

The following is information regarding installing SQL Express with Management Tools to the MYOBACCT instance with mixed authentication and configuration options.

Installing Microsoft SQL Server Express and Microsoft SQL Server Tools

Install Microsoft SQL Server Express
  1. Ensure you meet the SQL Server: Hardware and software requirements.

If you have an earlier version of Management Studio, remove it first via add/remove or programs and features.

  1. Download and run SQL 2022-SSEI-Expr.exe. SQL Server 2022 Express opens.

  2. Choose Download Media.

  3. Choose your download options and click Download.

    SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe is downloaded.

  4. Run the downloaded SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe file. The installer opens.

  5. Click New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation.

  6. Agree to the Licence Terms.

  7. Click Next until you see the Installation Rules.

  8. Click Next.

  9. Depending on what’s applicable for your practice, either deselect or select Azure Extension for SQL Server.

  10. Click Next. The Feature Selection window appears.

  11. Ensure Database Engine Services & SQL Server Replication are selected and click Next. The Instance Configuration window appears.

  12. Select Named Instance and change Named instance and Instance ID from SQLExpress to MYOBACCT.

  13. Click Next. The Server Configuration windows appears

  14. Ensure both SQL Server Database Engine and SQL Server Browser have an Account Name. For example: NT Service\MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS or NTAUTHORITY\LOCALSERVICE.

  15. Ensure both SQL Server Database Engine and SQL Server Browser have the Startup Type set to Automatic.

Disregard the Collation tab.

  1. Click Next. The Database Engine Configuration window appears.

  2. On the Server Configuration tab select Mixed Mode and enter the Password.

    You need to meet the password requirements below for certain features in AE/AO to work:

    • Passwords must have between 8–14 characters. If you choose a password that is 15 characters or longer, some features in AE/AO may not work.

    • Passwords must have one lowercase, uppercase, numerical and special character.

  3. Click the Data Directories tab, change the instance root directory or other directories if needed and click Next. The wizard continues and the Complete window appears.

  4. Click Close. The installation is complete.

  5. Restart the computer.

Install Microsoft SQL Server Tools
  1. Download and run SSMS-Setup-ENU.exe.

  2. Click Install. The installation begins and the Installation Progress window appears.

  3. When the Setup Completed window appears, click Close. The installation is complete.

  4. Restart the computer.

Configure protocols for Microsoft SQL Server
  1. Go to START > Programs > Microsoft SQL Server 20xx > SQL Server Configuration Manager. The SQL Server Configuration Manager appears.

  2. Expand SQL Server Network Configuration. The Protocols for MYOBACCT option appears.

  3. Click Protocols for MYOBACCT. The Protocol Name and Status columns appear.

  4. Right-click Named Pipes and select Enable. A warning window appears.

  5. Click OK. Named Pipes are enabled.

  6. Right-click TCP/IP and select Enable. A warning window appears.

  7. Click OK. TCP/IP is enabled.

  8. Click SQL Server Services in the left-hand pane. A list of SQL Servers appears.

  9. Right-click SQL Server (MYOBACCT) and select Restart. The service is restarted.

NZ AO only

There will be changes to AO Classic GL connection after installing SQL 2019. See Changes in AO after upgrading from SQL 2014 to SQL 2019.
